Residents will be asked to elect two trustees to the Board of Education. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes, including write-ins, will each be elected to one of the following terms: a) one, five-year term, commencing July 1, 2017 and expiring June 30, 2022 and b) to complete the term of May 17, 2017 to June 30, 2018 to fill the vacancy left by a former board member who moved out of the district. Two individuals have submitted candidate petitions. What motivates you to run for the Kendall Board of Education?
I am a lifelong member of this community; I was born and raised in this town. I am a graduate of the Kendall school district. I have seen the transition from a curriculum I am familiar with to a common core-driven one. I bring insight from both a parent’s perspective and an educational one. I recognize our ongoing endeavor to bring the best out of our schools as we continue to try to increase enrollment, adapt and keep up with technology, and strengthen sports and extracurricular programs that face a diminishing number of participants. Above all, I hope to maintain and support the commitment to excellent academics and character-building that I experienced as a student in the district. I hope to keep our schools true to the heart of Kendall that I have always known.

What motivates you to run for the Kendall Board of Education?
I’d like to see our district continue to be fiscally responsible, but give our kids as many opportunities as we can. Our teachers are the best in the area and our students’ successes reflect that, so we are moving in the right direction. Our enrollment is declining, so we need to make cost-effective choices. We need to think outside the box. We should be at the leading edge of combining our buying power with other districts. We need to look at combining some athletic teams so that younger athletes are not forced to play up a level just to form a team. Combining the wrestling team with Holley this year is an example of how combining teams works well. We don’t have to combine all teams, just where it makes the most sense. We have a responsibility to offer all kids the same opportunities.
